What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
THE PLAIN-ENGLISH GUIDE
What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? The category has five names and no agreement. AEO. GEO. AI Search Optimization. Generative Engine Optimization. AI SEO. Here's what it actually is, why it replaced traditional SEO, and how a local business gets named by ChatGPT, Google's AI Overview, and Perplexity.
The short answer
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your business named and cited inside the direct answers that AI search tools — ChatGPT, Google's AI Overview, Perplexity, Gemini, and Siri — give to users before they ever see a list of links. Traditional SEO optimizes for the list. AEO optimizes for the answer that appears above it.
Why the name keeps changing
If you've searched this, you've seen it called five different things. Here's the map, because the vocabulary confusion is itself a sign of how new the category is:
- AI Search Optimization — the plainest term. What most business owners type.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — the technical term for optimizing to be the cited answer.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — near-identical to AEO; emphasizes generative AI surfaces specifically.
- AI SEO — loose umbrella term, often used loosely by agencies still doing old SEO with a new label.
- LLM SEO — rarer; emphasizes large language models as the target.
They all point at the same shift: customers now get answers, not lists. We use "AI Search Optimization" in plain conversation and "AEO" as the technical term. Don't get lost in the acronyms — the work is what matters.
How AEO is different from traditional SEO
This is the part that trips up even experienced marketers, so here it is cleanly:
Optimizes for the list of blue links.
Goal: rank in positions 1–10. Measured by ranking position and click-through. Works when the customer scrolls a list and clicks. That behavior is disappearing.
Optimizes to be the cited answer.
Goal: get named in the AI's direct answer. Measured by citation share — how often the AI names your business when asked about your category. Works when the customer asks and accepts the answer without scrolling. That behavior is now the majority.
Your traditional SEO can be flawless and your AEO can be zero. That gap is why so many businesses with great Google rankings are watching their phones go quiet. The rankings are fine. The answers don't name them.
How to rank in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity
The short version, then the honest version.
The short version: AI surfaces name the businesses they understand most clearly and see described most consistently across the sources they trust. Get described clearly, consistently, in the right places, and you get named.
The honest version: it's a system, not a trick. There are four moving parts — what the AI can find about you, how clearly it's described, how many trusted surfaces confirm it, and whether anyone's measuring the result. That's the four-step system we run for clients: Listen, Position, Show Up Everywhere, Prove It. The specifics are below.
Does AEO matter for a local business?
More than for anyone. When someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview for "[a service] near me," the AI returns two or three local businesses by name. If you're one of them, you get the call. If you're not, the customer never learns you exist. For a local home-service business, a law firm, a dental practice, or any business with a local catchment and a real customer value, AEO is no longer optional — it's the difference between a full schedule and a quiet phone.

What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization — optimizing your business to be named in the direct answers AI search tools give, rather than just ranking in a list of links.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Effectively yes. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) describe the same practice with slightly different emphasis. GEO stresses generative-AI surfaces; AEO stresses being the cited answer. In practice they're used interchangeably.
Is SEO dead?
No — but it's no longer enough on its own. Traditional SEO still helps the AI surfaces find and trust you. AEO is the layer on top that gets you named in the answer. You need both; most businesses only have the first.
How do I measure my AEO performance?
With citation share — the percentage of relevant AI-answered queries in your category that name your business. We call it your Visibility Score™. The free Diagnostic calculates your baseline.
Can I do AEO myself?
The principles are learnable, but the execution is a continuous system across seven surfaces. A motivated owner can run the basics; most hire it done. Either way, start by measuring where you stand — that's what the Diagnostic is for.
